Kathmandu, Nepal (AHN) – Nepali Diasporas living in New York face a language barrier, creating a major challenge that causes immigrants to miss out on jobs and other opportunities in the United States.

Most of the Nepalis who reached the U.S. in search of green pastures are at the receiving end of downward socio-economic mobility, forcing them to lower their living standards in order to survive and support family members back home, a study has revealed.

“While in Nepal, people have dreams of doing well in the U.S. However, there is a huge difference between what you think of America and when you actually come here,” says New York-based non-profit organisation Adhikaar. “People have to work really hard to survive here.”

“Even if you are educated, you won’t be able to find a job of your choice if you don’t have the [right] documents,” a Nepali worker told the group. “You can earn money here, but not respect.”

Much of the problems faced by the Nepali-speaking community in New York City are typical of those faced by emerging communities. The federal minimum wage of $7.25 is not enough to survive and support a family in New York City, the report adds. Making matters worse, migrant workers in the informal sector are often exploited by the employers and are paid below the legal minimum wage.

The report titled “Snapshots of the Nepali-speaking Community in New York City: Demographics and Challenges” reveals that language barrier has become a major challenge for most of the Nepali-speaking people in finding jobs and other services. For example, many Nepalis in the U.S. do not have health insurance, and almost three-fourths of them face challenges in obtaining healthcare.

Many Nepali migrants are unable to transfer their work experience, skills and education from Nepal. Over half of the Nepalis in New York were involved in business or a professional sector in Nepal. While most Nepali immigrants are able to find jobs in New York, they are often low-wage jobs consuming long hours and providing few benefits. While immigration status is a reason for Nepali immigrants doing low-wage jobs, it is not the only one, the report adds. “Nearly half of the respondents to survey have the legal right to work in the U.S., yet most of them faced challenges.”

The most common types of job for men are works in restaurant, gas station, taxi or limousine and moving industry, while women often work as domestic workers and at nail salons or beauty parlours. Report has it that those who intend to earn degrees find themselves unable to attain their goal due to the number of hours they must work to pay for their education and living expenses.

John Nestor – AHN Sports Correspondent

Eden Prairie, MN, United States (AHN) – Minnesota Vikings interim coach Leslie Frazier expects quarterback Brett Favre to return to practice Thursday to test his injured shoulder.

Favre has a sprained right shoulder that he suffered in Minnesota’s victory over Buffalo on Sunday.

Frazier said Favre will not practice Wednesday and will then give it a go Thursday.

“I talked with him just a little bit earlier today and we were just talking about his health and just seeing where he was,” Frazier said during an interview with Chris Russo on Sirius XM’s Mad Dog Radio.

“He probably won’t practice (Wednesday) but we’ll get a chance to see how he looks on Thursday and just try to make a determination based on that, you know, how things will look for Sunday. But we’re all hoping that he’ll be healthy enough to play. He’s still a great quarterback and if he’s able to play it gives us a great chance to win against New York.”

Favre suffered a sprained sternoclavicular joint in his throwing shoulder on his first pass attempt in Sunday’s victory over the Buffalo Bills. He was replaced by Tarvaris Jackson and did not return.

Favre not practicing on a Wednesday is nothing new. He has sat out four of six Wednesday practices since he suffered a stress fracture in his left ankle in October.

The decision to play or not to play is likely Favre’s. The Vikings still have a shot at the playoffs, albeit a small one, and then there is Favre’s NFL-record starting streak (297 games) to consider.

In his 20th and possibly final season, if Favre can throw, he will likely go.

“Brett’s our starting quarterback and if he’s healthy, I mean, he’s gonna be out there,” Frazier said. “If there’s any definition of an Iron Man, it would be Brett Favre. I mean, it’s incredible what he’s accomplished in his career. For a quarterback to play that many consecutive games?”

“I don’t think that’s a streak that will ever be broken. But he can still play at a high level and there’s no question in my mind, if he’s healthy he’ll lead us to a win on Sunday.”

Los Angeles, CA, United States (CNS) – Josh Duhamel, star of the “Transformers” films and Mr. Fergie himself, was kicked off an airplane Thursday after refusing to turn off his Blackberry before takeoff.

According to TMZ, Duhamel was heading from New York’s La Guardia Airport to Kentucky when he had to be asked three times by a flight attendant to turn off his phone, to which he refused.

Duhamel, 38, was being “very rude” and “taunting the attendant,” a passenger told TMZ. He even reportedly laughed at the attendant’s third request.

The flight attendant then called for backup and the plane, already delayed and on the runway for departure, had to be turned back to the gate, where two officers boarded and escorted the actor off the plane.

The flight was delayed for 90 minutes, angering passengers even further.

Duhamel’s rep stated, “The incident obviously happened and he’s sorry.”

Stephanie Sims – Celebrity News Service Reporter

New York, NY, United States (CNS) – Charlie Sheen’s texts to Capri Anderson have been made public. The porn actress was mad at Sheen for ruining a purse before their night allegedly turned violent.

TMZ reported all the texts. In one text, Sheen says, “All I need is an Acct number etc and I will wire u 20k if u think that will cover everything … I really feel bad, u are as cool and sexy and as sweet and fun and friendly as they get!”

Just before sending that text, Anderson had texted Sheen “u trashed my brand new prada purse dude not cool – how u managed to rip the strap off and put 2 holes in it is beyond me.”

After offering $20,000 Sheen says, “Don’t worry about our mutual friends, deal with me directly and I promise u kind lady, all will be restored and set straight.”

The night after the incident, at 6:28 PM, Sheen is still trying to connect, texting, “Just landed, perhaps we can speak tonite….?”

Anderson replies, “Yes u can call me. I don’t have a bank account believe it or not.”

Sheen responds, “Oh, well in that case, lemme put together a plan to get u square and flush. Can u tok (sic) for a sec now sweetie?”

Then Sheen texted, “Good news! My asst Rick is good friends with a cat named Mark (last name redacted) in NY, he will get the wire, cash that bitch, and deliver it to u where ever it’s convenient … I’ll get the ball Rollin in am, and have data for u asap after that…☺”

Anderson then wrote, “Can he leave it somewhere secure for me to pick up? Like with a bank rep … I’m rlly nervous about all this.”

Sheen responds, “Of course, whatever makes u feel better…”

Sheen ends by saying, “Lemme start that ball Rollin and I’ll get back to u with the details…”

The transaction never took place.

A new breakthrough secret is all you now need in order to get your Google AdWords pay-per-clicks FREE!

A gentleman from New York discovered what he calls an “oversight” on the part of 99.9% of all marketers that allows him to get otherwise paid-for advertising at Google as well as all other search engines that allow sponsored ads.

And no, nothing about his “secret” is illegal – nor does it require that you know someone on the “inside” at Google, Yahoo, MSN, Overture and others.

Instead, the New Yorker boasts proudly “…this is something that I caught onto just before 2000 when there was so much search engine craze running around, and started doing small just to test things at first … but which I later expanded on after getting the hang of it.”

This same fellow went on to start and operate sixteen separate online companies selling everything from pet food, DVDs, children’s toys & games, books, software, and sold not only his own manufactured products but became an affiliate for other web businesses – all the while applying his mastermind secret.

Over the course of nearly eight years the New Englander confesses “I’ve actually gotten over $87 million in advertising that using my secret I never had to pay for … and the largest share of which was more recently in Google pay-per-clicks as well as other forms of pad advertising at search engines … all of which I got for free …”

So powerful is his secret that he’s able to monopolize any niche online, and can always secure the top premium spots just above the usual organic results featured at most search engines.

He still has to set up an account with the search engines – but after applying his secret he is removed from having to pay for all the costs otherwise involved.
Again, nothing about his secret is either illegal or robs from the search engines.
One spokesperson from one of the most popular search engines said chuckling after being made privy to this amazing secret “Wow! Ha! This is really unique … and in my expert opinion it would only serve to enhance and bring more business to us at [name of search engine withheld for legal & confidentiality reasons] and not cause us to lose business in the slightest. Amazing!”

The northerner revealed that in this nearly eight years’ period of time since applying his secret he’s done well over $300 million in sales revenue with a most diverse line of products, and most recently in the last two years netted nearly $166 million after really “buckling down and pressing my secret to its fullest potential.”

Now to everyone else’s fortune, the city slicker is releasing his secret for getting an unlimited amount of pay-per-click ads to the general public. But he’s not promising any of us for how long.

A bit of an eccentric, the gentleman says “We’ll see just how long I can make it available before it saturates things.”

One famous public web guru pointed out that although this man may gain economically more so as a result of the publication of his secret “he’s already so amazingly rich that whether he continues or discontinues its sale will neither make nor break the man, but not grabbing it for yourself while it’s still available could prove disastrous for you as you may only have one chance, and a very limited one at that, to get this.”

It is currently available at:

http://tohard007.freegoogle.hop.clickbank.net

…so you may want to head on over there now and get it.

It’s in a very easily readable format and is quickly and readily understood and mastered by anyone with even a 4th grade reading level.

While you’re there, why not scroll down and review for yourself the huge successes others are now having with this incredible breakthrough in targeted advertising now made freely available to the rest of us?

New York, NY, United States (AHN) – A New York man is suing his former landlords after an air conditioning unit fell from a sixth floor window and hit him on the head.

Anthony Franzese, who had been in a long legal battle with his former landlords surrounding an eviction prior to the incident, is now suing them for $21 million.

He suffered mental and physical disabilities by the falling A/C unit. He sued the landlords, Areta Podhorodecki and Zenon Chernyk, claiming the duo harassed him. They claim Franzese was a squatter whom they had to kick out.

The 67-year-old man was walking his dog in the East Village when the 45 pound air conditioner fell six stories before bouncing off a Wine Bar’s awning and hitting him on the head. He’s reported to have suffered a skull fracture and injured his brain. The resulting complications include suffering from mental and physical disabilities.

He also claims to have suffered a coma while undergoing treatment.

The lawsuit has been filed in Manhattan Supreme Court.

The lawsuit also accuses the landlords of installing the air conditioning unit in an improper way. The city’s building department cited the owners for improperly maintaining their building.

Linda Young – AHN News Writer

New York, NY, United States (AHN) – Some treasures from King Tut’s grave will return to Egypt next year.

New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art has agreed to return to Egypt objects in the museum that were taken from pharaoh Tutankhamun’s tomb.

Museum officials agreed to recognize Egypt’s claims to 19 artifacts that have been in the museum’s possession since early last century.

The Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt had sought the return of the relics for a number of years. Unlike some relics that Egypt allows archeologists to keep, the Egyptian government had never meant for any of the objects in King Tut’s tomb to leave the country.

However, the antiquities were illegally exported from the country and entered the Met’s collection in the 1920s and 1940s.

Among the relics are a bronze figurine of a dog with a golden collar, just under 1 inch high and a sphinx that is part of a bracelet made of semi-precious lapis lazuli.

Under the agreement, the objects will remain on display at the Met until June 2011. Then the objects will return to Egypt and go on display in the Tutankhamun galleries at Cairo’s Egyptian Museum until the entire collection is transferred to the Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza when it opens in 2012.

Tut is believed to have died about 3,000 years ago. His tomb, with a gold death mask, was discovered in 1922.

Flash is cool, right? And that lovely welcome screen and information-rich homepage your client wanted are just perfect. Or are they? We talked to six top designers and creative directors about their Web design pet peeves. What makes these pros cringe might surprise you.

1. Putting your brilliant design first.

“Whether or not the site is designed elegantly, what really matters to me is whether the navigation is intuitive, and whether the information is organized well. Design, for as much time as we spend on it, if it’s all about the visual elements, that can quickly get someone out of that site. I always try to focus on making sure the information makes sense before putting mouse on screen. Plan ahead. Get the answers before laying anything down. Get together with your project manager and design team, and get all the info from the client before start designing. It’s also important to get the navigation in front of people to make sure everyone can get that information quickly. Be constantly testing. Only then should you build the beautiful elements, the design of the site, around that. If that’s not there the site can be considered a failure. ”

- Andres Orrego, associate creative director of Chowder Inc. in New York

2. Going overboard with Flash.

“Flash is certainly a pet peeve. It has its place, for sure, but since the dot.com bust we’ve come a long way. Today our customers want to be found – they expect to be found – but what does that mean for us? We need to set the stage for search engine optimization, so we need to stay away from Flash. When I see a site overly done, you ask yourself, does it really make sense for you to do that in Flash? No.”

- Antonio Navarrete, president and creative director of SilentBlast in Toronto

3. The unwelcoming welcome screen.

” I hate everything about welcome screens. By clicking a link, I’ve already said that I want to go to visit your site, so there is no need to show me a ‘welcome’ screen with a quote. In fact, it is almost insulting to call it a ‘welcome screen’ – I’d almost respect it more if it was called a here-is-an-ad-so-we-can-make-money screen. As it is, this intermediate screen just delays users from accessing your content and gives them an opportunity to leave before they ever arrive.”

- Andrew Cafourek, co-founder and digital lead of A022 Digital in New York

4. The boggling homepage.

“People who are using your site, buying from your site, are not going to stay there or buy from you due to your awesome design. Most homepages are completely overwhelming. There is so much there – people try to communicate everything to everyone, and the real content gets lost. That’s a design disaster. It should tell people in three to five seconds who you are and what you do. That’s it. We have a design philosophy that we take from architecture: form follows function. When you are building a building, you want right angles and perfectly usable space. If you go to our homepage, you will see cleanliness and simplicity. I say this left and right, and my designers say it left and right: Websites have to breathe.”

- Martin Russell, creative director of The Ocean Agency in Chicago

5. Worshipping the fold.

“There’s been this maintained notion that everything has to be above a certain pixel dimension, and that everything below that gets lost. I don’t think that’s where we’re at anymore. People do scroll. They like portals. So especially with making BarackObama.com, that was something we stayed away from: We knew people would scroll, and we really wanted to keep more information on the homepage, make it a portal, and allow for more content to be available on the portal page. I think the key to making it work is making sure you present something and design with the pixel dimension in mind. On another site I did, there’s type interacting with an image makes you aware that there’s more going on below. Especially when you’re on blogs, they become very blah-y, and there’s no contrast in post styles. They don’t keep a variation that keeps readers interested. Variation in consistency lets you forget the fold.”

- Scott Thomas, a.k.a. @ SimpleScott

6. Not addressing the user’s real need.

“Many companies organize the site around their own internal categories, which is different from what the audience is actually looking for. In other words, they’ll build a site around products, because they’re thinking they have to sell the product and the product needs to be front and center. But when you think about it, you have to reverse it and first ask what need are you solving, and then present the product. I think there’s internal anxiety to make sure things get covered as a checklist, versus really stepping back and understanding what the users need. You have to have the perspective of an audience that may not know your brand, and there’s very often a complete absence of making people aware of your brand is, and why it’s relevant.”

- Sean Ketchem, strategy director of communication of MetaDesign in San Francisco

7. Hiding who you are.

“Transparency on the Web is the hottest and the biggest thing as far as getting people to purchase or relate to your services. Our portfolio page was always No. 1 for the seven years we’ve been in business. But then we created videos of each one of our employees talking about what they do and why they love it. That page is now No. 1. By far, the people behind the process, behind the product, are extremely important. We’ve had clients say ‘we went with you because we got to kind of meet everybody before we even walked in the door.’ The buying process starts with a relationship. That process can start with a video and tell you personally what I do rather than just a photo and a title. Really show them rather than tell them.”

- Martin Russell, creative director of The Ocean Agency in Chicago
