You should already have a website for your business in this digital age. Making your website popular is a large job if you’re a beginner, but it is well worth the time and effort. Here are some definite things you should do to out rank your competition.

This is a quick and simple strategy but it should not be over looked. Submit your business to “Google Local.” Other important search engines are “Yahoo, Live/MSN, Yelp, Yellow Pages, Super Pages, City Search and TrueLocal.” Searches in America these days amount to over 60% with Google. Add your company name, address and phone number to every webpage Search engines realize addresses from websites and put them in their index. Use this standard format: Business Name, Street, City, State, Zip Code, email address and Phone Number.

“Google Analytics” is a must, as I mentioned in my other article. It’s a free script that you can place within your site’s HTML and it lets you track visitor data past and present. Knowing how and when your web site does with visitors is a critical issue. You can forecast the future by reading a record of what’s happening on your site. You’ll be able to see quickly what’s working and what isn’t on your web site. Simply make corrections to your campaign based on the vital data you receive from this program. It’s free and informative.

Use the correct page title. It’s amazing how many novice webmasters over look using the correct page title and put the words “welcome” or “Homepage” as their title. The words Welcome means nothing to the search spider when it’s looking for a title. Welcome or Homepage tells the search engine nothing useful. A title like George’s Pet Shop or Wedding Music tells the spider exactly what your web site is about. Use your most important keywords first and keep your title under 65 characters. Search engines use the title among other things to determine how relevant to a particular search your site is. Optimize for Keywords. Search engines are attracted to what ever a person puts into a search. They compile the most relevant words to come up with what you see as a search results. This method may be a bit tedious, but it doesn’t hurt to optimize for relevant words on your site. Write down on a piece of paper the terms a person would use when looking for what you have on your site. Pretend you are your prospect. What would you put in the search field to look for what you want. The words that you write down as you pretend you’re someone else are the words you should use in the first few sentences of your web page. Here’s an example. If you’re web site is promoting Your pet shop, a prospect looking for a puppy would put these words into a search field: puppy pets dogs pooch little dog etc.

These are quick things that you can immediately do. I explain more technical things in my other writings.
