Grow Your Small Business Through Speaking

Speaking is powerful. There are countless opportunities for you as a small business leader to speak to grow your business. Imagine the marketing power of being able to address an audience of potential customers all in one place at one time. This is really extremely focused and targeted marketing. Small business owners need to speak to grow their business.

What does this mean? Well, imagine a local association meeting, mixer or major community service event. You could be a speaker at that event. You would provide a professional, and relevant message to the audience, give them some valuable information that they could use, and promote your business at the same time.

For example, if you sold business insurance, you might speak at a Chamber of Commerce breakfast mixer about the need to protect yourself from risk exposure in the marketplace. You could give stories of people who have unfortunately lost their business and damaged their family relationships because they had not properly protected themselves. The members would receive a better understanding of why they would need protection and you would be seen as a potential expert and source of that protection.

Realize that this is business development. This is not a commercial. If you speak for thirty minutes or so at a major function and you simply advertise your product or service for the entire time, this strategy will not work. This must be a free informational or training session with solid value for the listeners. Do not waste the time of your audience. Be genuine, sincere, and real in the speaking engagements. A thirty-minute commercial is not genuine.

Secondly, you need to be, at least decent at speaking. You do not need to be a master entertainer, but you cannot be a living substitute for sleeping pills either. People should have a good experience from listening to you. With stories and comical real-life examples this can often be accomplished. Do not try to a comedian however. Remember to be genuine. If you are not a good comedian, fine, do not be a comedian. If are good at telling stories, great tell stories.

Lastly, speak at the right venues. A parenting conference would be a great place to talk about the value of your tutoring program. If you own a pet obedience school however, your topic might be less valuable to the attendees. How can you learn where to speak? I have a great tip for you!
