As a home based or small business owner, have you ever thought about how you could grow your business If you were to act more like your dog. This may seem ridiculous or even absurd but why not? Dogs, especially family friendly breeds such as labs and retrievers have many qualities which we as business owners could use to help expand our businesses if we only took the time to consider these attributes, examine how they could benefit us and then put these into action. So what do these qualities and actions include?

1. Always greet someone in a friendly way. How does a dog greet you when they first see you? They run up to you, wag their tail, try to lick you, jump up on you and beg for a tummy rub. Although these actions are a bit on the extreme side if put into practice with other humans, the lessons still applies. Be nice and friendly when you greet others. Be excited to get to know them.

2. Take joy in the simple things. How easy is it to please a dog? Dogs take joy and find excitement in the easiest and simplest of things. A bone, a ball, a piece of meat, a friendly pat on the back. Too often, as business owners we forget that the journey to success is one of the things that can bring us joy.

3. Never give up. When a dog is looking for something, it digs or puts its nose to the ground and smells its way to the treasure. It keeps doing this until it finds what it is seeking. Never stop going after your desires and treasures.

4. Take time to associate with fellow business owners. What one thing excites a dog more than anything else? Another dog. Take time to get to know other people who are doing the same thing you are and who share similar goals. You will learn a lot from them and they will learn a lot from you.

5. Take time to relax every once in a while. Dogs never run around in circles or keep walking without stopping. Even when you are very busy, you must take time out to relax.

6. Take a walk every day. Healthy and happy dogs know that a walk once a day is essential. They thrive on getting their daily walk. As a small business owner, talking a walk will give you time to get in shape but also to take a break and clear your head.

7. Have a plan. Dogs never start digging unless they know where they are digging and what they can smell in the ground below. Make sure you know where you are headed and why before you begin searching for it.

8. Use your instinct. Dogs have a clear and distinctive instinct and they are masters at using it. Trust your gut when making decisions and then stick with it. Take time to explore each new opportunity which comes your way in order to make the best choice for you at the right time.

9. Learn how to communicate clearly and distinctly. Dogs are master communicators. When a dog sticks out its paw, or licks you or barks at you, you know immediately what it wants. Learn to communicate your needs, wants, and requests in the same clear fashion.

In short, the next time you have a chance to observe a dog, take note of how you could become more like one and in turn grow your business in ways you never thought possible.
